Course Overview

The CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) health and safety course is one of the most highly regarded training courses within the construction industry available for site managers and supervisors. The SMSTS training course helps site managers (and anyone wanting to become a site manager) to develop a better understanding of the legal, moral and social responsibilities of their role, and to manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions.

Who Should Attend

Site managers and site supervisors as well as proprietors of small to medium sized companies. Client-based personnel would also benefit from attending the SMSTS training course. Possession of the CITB SMSTS qualification is listed in the Approved Code of Practice for the construction (Design and Management) (CDM) Regulations as a demonstration of competence in the role of site manager.

Course Contents

  • Introduction to health and safety law, duties, responsibilities, enforcement and sanctions
  • Overviews/explanations of relevant construction activity legislation
  • Accident costs, causes, investigation, prevention and reporting requirements
  • Risk assessment and ‘principles of prevention’
  • Safety management systems, policies, plans, performance and measuring
  • Management of Contractors
  • Development of ‘safe systems of work’ and permit systems
  • Effective communicating
  • Motivating safety behaviour
  • Recognition of an organisation’s duties and responsibilities
  • Recognition of responsibilities of Managers, Supervisors and Operatives
  • Production of site activity instructions (safe system of work)
  • Planning for health and safety within the context of a project
  • Motivating safety behaviour
  • European platforms, and what is to come?
Delegates will be continuously assessed during the course in preparation for the final multiple choice examination.

Course Outcomes

On completion of the course your candidate will be able to:
  • Implement all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them during their daily work
  • Recognise the role of accident prevention
  • Implement new guidance and industry best practice
  • Understand the information required to complete effective safety risk assessments
  • State their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment
Your candidate will be awarded a:
  • CITB-Construction Skills Site Management Safety Training Scheme Certificate (valid 5 years) will be awarded to those persons who successfully complete the course including the compulsory final examination (80% pass grade).
