Novice CPCS Excavator 360° Above 10 Tonnes (A59)

Introduction

The tracked excavator 360 is a powerful digging machine, ideal for soft, uneven land and hills, and is a mainstay in heavy construction works. The 360 element allows it to excavate large amounts of materials and move them anywhere within the vehicle's radius. Operated from a cab on the rotating base consisting of a boom, dipper, and bucket, the excavator travels on tracks or wheels around the site. Using such a large and critical machine requires knowledge and skill to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

This CPCS Tracked A59 certification delivers a thorough understanding of the relevant operational and safety requirements that apply to 360 excavator operators working in the construction industry and allied environments. It is specifically aimed at Plant Operators with no experience in excavation over 10 tonnes who require practical and theory-based training and assessment on an Excavator 360 with tracks and handling 10 tonnes or more.

Course Outline

With a mix of practical and theory-based exercises and tutorials, delegates will cover manufacturer information and general knowledge of a tracked Excavator 360 and participate in practical activities to recognise machine components and functions, best practices and operating methods.

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with regulations. In addition, choose to learn with Citrus, and delegates benefit from our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced trainers coach delegates on this course, completing the session with a practical observation and short theory test. Delegates must pass all assessments to qualify for the CPCS Red Trained Operator card, valid for two years.

Course Programme

This training is essential for workers to operate a tracked Excavator 360 safely. Delegates will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, understand procedures and appropriate documentation and classifications.

The learnings will take delegates through:

  • Setting the excavator for site travel and relevant duties
  • Travelling over differing types of terrain, including undulating ground and slope
  • Manoeuvring in confined areas using forward and reverse direction
  • Creating a vertical trench to the specified dimensions
  • Completing a square excavation with vertical sides at the end of the dug trench
  • Loading material into a vehicle
  • Removing the bucket and replacing it with an alternative
  • Lifting, loading and rotating to the appropriate degrees and radius
  • Reinstating a work area back to the original state
  • Shutdown and secure procedures
  • Loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter
On Completion

On completion of the training course, delegates will have sufficient knowledge and information to enable them to complete the CPCS theory and practical test for 360 excavators.

At the end of the training, successful delegates will:

  • Understand and recognise all learned endorsements
  • Have excellent knowledge of health & safety legislation, including lifting operations, lifting equipment regulations and lifting signals to BS7121
  • Be able to carry out pre-start and running checks on the machine
  • Be confident to set the excavator for site travel and relevant duties
  • Travel over differing types of terrain, including undulating ground and slope
  • Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction

The Construction card has the CSCS logo and is recognised on Construction sites. First, you gain a trained two-year operator card, after which you need to complete an NVQ to earn a five-year competent card. The traditional card is valid for five years and is used more for related industries or self-owned firms.

To enter the CPCS scheme and get a CPCS card, you must complete and pass the relevant CITB Health Safety & Environment test. You can find out more information and book your Health, Safety & Environment test on 0344 9944 488. Then you must complete and pass the relevant theory and practical test(s) for the category(ies) of machinery you want to operate. Find out more about the theory and practical test by contacting your local CPCS registered test centre, which you can find here, https://www.nocnjobcards.org/help-and-support/test-centre-search . We advise that you contact more than one test centre, as they have varying availability, costs and timings. If you already have the NVQ qualification for the plant machinery you operate, take a copy of the full NVQ certificate to the CPCS test centre, where they will apply for the Blue Competent Operator Card. If not, they will apply for the Red Trained Operator Card.
